Director Biography - Sade Sellers

Sade’ Sellers is a director, screenwriter, and producer who analyzes the cycle of grief through storytelling. In 2017, the TvOne network hired her to write the dramatic thriller, Deadly Dispatch, starring Tamala Jones and Bone Crusher.

Shortly after, Sade’ was hired as the Vice President of Content Acquisitions and Development at Leah Daniels Butler’s production company, 1oneninety5. There she co-produced the horror feature “Survival” starring Elise Neal, and was an associate producer on “The App That Stole Christmas” starring Ray J (now available on Netflix).

In 2021, Sade line produced the horror feature “Hawaii Vacation” after parting ways with 1oneninty5 due to the global pandemic. That same year, she was a staff writer for Facebook Watch’s Sci-Fi/Thriller mini-series “Kontaxt”. When she’s not writing, she continues to record her monthly horror review podcast, Afro Horror, which is also a blog series for Final Draft.

Director Statement

I can't remember a time before this year when I looked at a photo of myself and liked it. For years I actively avoided being in front of the camera. In group photos, I would hide in the background or try to minimize myself as much as possible. I spent years in therapy thinking I had severe body dysmorphia. Still, the problem, which didn't turn out to be a problem at all, wasn't my body image or self-esteem -- my perversion to taking photos turned out to be my internal struggle with being gay.

The queer journey from being in the closet to publically coming out is so sacred and different for everyone. For me, seeing myself in photos, even ones where I am smiling, terrified me. I was convinced everyone knew. Everyone can see right through the secret I was hiding. As it turns out, some of that was true. When I came out most of the relations from friends and family were "Duh!" Even now, I look back at some of those cringy photos from my childhood and say "Yup, that's a lesbian."

Writing and directing "Picture" was my way of facing that irrational fear of seeing myself on camera. Yes, there was something there in those pictures. Something I spent my entire life trying to run away from. But now, I've not only embraced that thing, but live for it.
