Director Biography - Jess Milne

https://www.jessmilne.com/

Trained in fine art, theatre and design, my career began in VFX, motion graphics and post production, I held key creative positions with Cutting Edge. A two year contract with Defence saw me move into production, and then I moved to Melbourne to set up the national film unit for Mazda Australia. I then moved back to Sydney to do my masters at AFTRS, and was appointed the Head of Content for The Australian Communications and Media Authority. I have lectured in design/animation at The Queensland College of Art as well as numerous short courses at The Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney.

In 2015 I completed the Masters in Screen Arts and Business at AFTRS and met Nick and am the co-founder and Creative Director at TEN ALPHAS. We co-produce beautiful short form corporate and commercial content along with an increasing slate of original work. We produced a 34 minute drama called Mate which won the Grand Prix at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and was longlisted for an Oscar

I was creative director and animator on Blockhead and Sparkles and the Flood of Tears. Funded by Screen NSW and their Screen Ability program, this animated short film celebrates neurodiversity as it follows two friends with unique gifts, and it features hand-drawn oil pastels by acclaimed artist Digby Webster. This film premiered at Sydney Film Festival 2021.

I am super thankful for this pathway which has led to where I'm at today as a Cinematographer. My passion is in collaborating with Directors to create images that transport audiences into their story worlds.
In 2024 I won an AACTA award for Best Short Film, for Finding Addison, for which I was EP and Cinematographer.

I am a full member of Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) and Screen Producers

Director Statement

People coming and going in your life can be encapsulated in the visual metaphor of the four seasons. The seasons of our life. The season we’re in and out of.

We visualise this in a colour blocked world for each of the seasons. The world is retro and fun 1960’s and 1970’s.

The colour palette moves from warm to cool. Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring

Using a circular flow of the space, which we pass through four times, each time a different dance element in a different colour way which symbolises the season of life.

The circular shape of The Servo plays into this idea also

Elana is the host of the party and the action centres around her. She is the casual observer of her own life, while the guests seem to be oblivious to her as the vignettes unfold in between
random dance sequences.
During these sequences guests come and go, with some dramatic beats.

It’s fun and cheeky and stylised. The dance sequences are isolated which allows us to explore narrative in vignettes dotted around the room.
