Logline- From beyond the Rainbow Bridge, a devoted service dog offers heartfelt advice to his successor on love, loyalty, and how to care for the disabled veteran they both cherish.
In "Passing the Leash", a late service dog named Dixon watches from above as a new pup, Lucas, steps into his paws to serve a disabled Air Force veteran healing from cancer and PTSD. Jamie Hoyt earned her Associate of Arts in Theater and a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies with concentrations in Literature, Psychology, and Communication from Wichita State University, while also spending a semester in London studying literature and theater. After completing her undergraduate studies, she earned a Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing with a concentration in screenwriting from Southern New Hampshire University. Her thesis feature-length western screenplay, "Dust Riders", was a semifinalist in the 2019 WeScreenplay Diverse Voices competition.
A disabled veteran, Jamie served four years in the United States Air Force as Security Forces. She later worked for four years in the Juvenile Justice System and spent many years in education as a substitute teacher and as an English Adjunct Professor at the college level.
She’s a filmmaker and screenwriter drawn to stories that challenge and uplift—inviting audiences to confront darkness, find resilience, discover hope in unexpected places, and uplift underrepresented voices—all while embracing femme-driven narratives.
As someone inspired by my family’s screenwriting legacy, including my uncles George Seaton (Miracle on 34th Street) and Eric Freiwald (Lassie), I aim to craft work that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Beyond writing, her experiences as a two-time cancer survivor, solo traveler, and advocate for mental health, spirituality, and women’s empowerment continue to shape her creative voice. She strives to create stories that ultimately inspire hope, resilience, and meaningful change.
Although "Passing the Leash" is told from the perspective of my late service dog, Dixon, it’s also a documentary about the life we shared together. Filmed across the country over the span of Dixon’s life — including Puerto Rico and Alaska — it captures the strengths and vulnerabilities of life through healing, adventure, challenge, and change. As I began a new chapter with my current service dog, Lucas, he experienced many of the same things Dixon did: traveling, sharing in my filmmaking journey, exploring nature and theme parks, and even staying by my side through a recurrence of cancer. Although currently based in Kansas, I have lived short stents in Oregon, Alaska, and Florida.
The film features music from Blues Hall of Famer Bobby Messano, legendary American jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan, Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductee Rudy Love, and the Switzerland-based folk band Yaouei.
