As a bisexual female there is a possibility of eventually ending up with a female as my life partner. So I thought to myself how would the encounter with both families go and how would I hope for it to turn out, so I explored that idea.

I always try to wrap an important message with a sweet flavor of comedy. It always makes it easier to swallow the facts that way. In the case of "Pass The Salt" I wanted send the message of "LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE" and to touch on the fact that we are not born with prejudice and judgments and hate. It is something that we end up learning due to the environment or our upbringing. As with this film I played with that idea with the adults actually learning from the kids to put their differences aside and accept each other. Well in this case, the two families never stopped bickering but instead, they geared towards arguing about the details of the wedding rather than the differences in their culture and religion.

Having said that I have to nod Michael Giampa, a fantastic writer who worked with me on the script and Hayley Gray, another female comrade in the film industry who jumped on board at my time of need and gracefully helped direct and produce the film with me.

Sending everyone love and appreciation to everyone for even taking the time to listen to my message and watch my film. Hopefully you got some laughs along the way. Thank you for your time.

When Panta first told me about Pass the Salt I knew she had to make this movie and that I had to help her. When she told me she wanted to do it with a three week turn around and I was surprised, but I knew that if we found the right cast and crew we could do it, and we did. We had a phenomenal cast who gave their life and authenticity to our screen as well as an amazing crew who made this a dinner to remember.

Alma Harel said it best, “as a woman who is painfully aware of how tone-deaf representation can be, I strive to bring as much sensitivity to the way in which I handle casting and the nuances of every person I film from marginalized communities.”

This project brought together people from the woman’s, queer, muslim and jewish communities to make a piece of art that is hilarious, entertaining, and at it’s heart about love and acceptance.

I am grateful for Panta’s trust in bringing me on to direct this film with her, and am excited to bring a film about two families of different faiths breaking bread to screens around the world.

Thank you,
Hayley Gray
