Pacha Pasmo is a midwife working in a war zone. The civil war in Colombia, which has caused over 220,000 deaths, has officially ended in 2016 with the signature of the historic peace deal. However, the province of El Chocó where Pacha lives, is yet a conflict zone. The government still fights there the National Liberation Army, dozens of paramilitary groups and dissident groups of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
We were interested about this story because it expresses how the war has and continues to affect this forgotten undeveloped region. Through the story of Pacha the film addresses the extreme poverty of Chocó. Located in the northern part of the country on the Pacific Coast and mostly populated by Afro-Colombians, the remote area distant from the capital Bogotá is never a priority for national investments. It's development rates are some of the worst on the continent: 58% of Chocó's population lives under the poverty line, of which 33% lives in extreme poverty, chronic malnutrition is a problem that almost 20% of the population faces and infant mortality rate is 65 per 1,000 births. Such a dire reality provides the ideal background for armed groups to control most of the economic activities in this underreported region. “Pacha’s Notebook” is a film about life in a environment marked by death and we believe it deserves to be seen by the world.
