Ashley is a Bronx born Nuyorican producer, director, writer, podcaster and small business owner. Additionally she is the Co-founder of Blended City, a non-profit organization that aims to support and connect non-traditional artists in disadvantaged communities by providing a multidisciplinary space to create. She is an advocate for the work of female identifying, Latinx, and socially underserved artists. Ashley has a passion for storytelling and creating art. Recently, she wrote and directed the short play ‘Papi’, which won the First-Place “Best of Fest” award in the 2021 Nuyorican Poets Café Theater Festival.
I chose to direct this film because it's an important story based on true events that shows how hurtful it can be for a young person to be bullied by someone in their own family. It's ultimately about what happens when someone is pushed to the edge; they blow up sometimes hurting others in the process. It also shows the dynamics of a Puerto Rican family which we don't get to see on screen often. We created an authentic setting which many Latinx people may find nostalgic.
