PAST DUE
Derek, a young man struggling to leave behind a life of crime, faces the weight of impending fatherhood with his girlfriend Crystal. When he attempts to steal a BMW, he discovers its driver is Ray— a man who was once just like him. The encounter sparks a volatile battle of regret, anger, and redemption that neither can walk away from. As Derek is pulled deeper into his criminal ties, Ray risks everything to protect him, leading to a tragic showdown. Past Due is a gritty, emotionally charged story about breaking cycles of violence, the cost of redemption, and the fragile bonds of fatherhood.

Hailing from Detroit, Dominic Daniel wasted no time making his mark in Hollywood, scoring roles in film and television shortly after arriving in Los Angeles. Dominic is a multifaceted artist and entrepreneur. He founded Rock City Media to produce various film and television projects, including his directorial debut "Past Due," Fiendish, the upcoming horror feature Skinned, and the television series King Pin. His passion for storytelling extends to children's literature, where he has authored a series of empowering books for young readers. As a detail-driven and experienced creative writer with over ten years of experience developing and producing original content for various media platforms, he's confident that he is ready to take on the challenges of creating a television show. A background in writing content for online and television has pushed Dominic to develop innovative content and given him the leadership experience garnered through years of production and development. Recently, his new play, Black Bottom Shake: The Musical, was selected for workshop by Theater Square, adding the title of playwright to his credits, which already include being a story editor and writer for shows developed for MTV and Machinima (WB).
Growing up in Detroit, I witnessed first-hand the struggles of families navigating poverty, systemic inequities, and fractured fatherhood. Past Due was born out of those experiences — the “what if” questions that haunted me about the cycles we inherit and whether we have the power to break them.
Like Derek, I was raised by a single Black mother. My father was absent from my life, and I never had the chance to reconcile with him. That absence shaped me, and in many ways, Past Due became my way of wrestling with the conversations that never happened. Through Derek and Ray, I wanted to capture the volatility of those imagined encounters — the anger, the longing, the regrets, and the fragile possibility of forgiveness.
This story is deeply personal. Derek represents the young men I grew up with — brilliant, ambitious, but too often pulled into survival choices. Ray represents the absent fathers and men trying, sometimes too late, to repair what was broken. Through their confrontation, I wanted to explore the tension between abandonment and responsibility, anger and forgiveness, destruction and rebirth.
At its core, Past Due also examines timing: the intersection of birth and death, endings and beginnings. I wanted to craft a film where one life leaves as another begins, showing both tragedy and hope.
As a filmmaker, I’m committed to telling stories that expose systemic struggles while affirming humanity. I believe in cinema’s power to spark empathy and dialogue. My goal is for Past Due to resonate not only as a festival short but as a proof-of-concept for a larger body of work examining legacy, family, and redemption.
