Overland: A Journey to the Heart of Ecuador
Embark on an extraordinary journey across the ocean to discover Ecuador—a land where history, culture, and unparalleled biodiversity converge. From the heights of Quito to the depths of the Amazon rainforest, traversing the majestic Andean peaks, this documentary captures the essence of a nation rich in wonders.
Our voyage begins in Quito, the world's highest capital city, renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic center. Here, colonial and modern influences intertwine, offering a captivating blend of Spanish architecture and indigenous myths.
We then venture to the Cotopaxi volcano, one of the highest and most active volcanoes on Earth. Amidst the natural splendor of Cotopaxi National Park, we delve into historical eruptions and marvel at the incredible high-altitude wildlife—pumas, condors, and wild horses roam these rugged landscapes. Along the way, unexpected encounters and delightful discoveries enrich our experience.
The adventure continues deep within the Ecuadorian Amazon, one of the planet's most biodiverse regions. Guided by a local indigenous expert, Filippo uncovers unique flora like the "Walking Palm" and "Lemon Ants," navigating the rich ecosystems aboard balsa rafts.
Immersed in the lush rainforest, we explore the vast and nearly untouched Amazonian East, home to an astonishing array of unique animal and plant species. At a rescue and rehabilitation center for exotic animals, we witness the tireless efforts of volunteers saving creatures from illegal trafficking. Our indigenous guide shares profound knowledge of local flora and fauna, emphasizing the importance of preserving his people's culture, the Quichua language, and ancestral skills. An encounter with a shaman offers an intimate glimpse into purification rituals and traditional medicine. We also delve into the cultivation and fermentation of cacao, savoring the exquisite quality of Ecuadorian white cacao at a family-run plantation nestled in the heart of the forest.
As we journey westward, we traverse the Andes once more, visiting legendary sites said to guard the fabled Inca treasure, as narrated by our own Beppe Tenti. An excursion to Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest peak, reveals its unique geological features. Returning to civilization, we explore Cuenca, a city steeped in history and culture, exuding a unique atmosphere with its blend of indigenous, colonial, and modern influences.
This documentary invites you to experience the myriad facets of Ecuador—a journey that promises to inspire and captivate.
