Director Biography - Jing Chao

A 19-year-old boy, born and raised in Penang, Malaysia, Jing Chao started making videos for clubs and events of his high school, then joined a local film production team as a full-time videographer and video editor after graduation. One day, he stumbled upon a client on Fiverr entering a film festival, introducing him to the concept of film festivals and how they operated. He saw this as a great opportunity, so he started his passion project, funding it from his own pockets and collaborating with two of his friends to produce his first-ever short film - "Outside". He is also a FPV (First Person View) drone pilot who aims to bring attention to the usage of FPV drones in the film industry and hopes that it will be picked up on by large film producers such as those from Hollywood or those from Netflix.

Director Statement

This short film "Outside" focuses on the theme that if we want to quit our current state of depression or unhappiness, we should go out and do something we love doing. In the story, the father's death makes Kai Xi really depressed, so much that he refuses the help of his mother through her paper notes, thinking that his father is still alive. However, he remembered a message from his father about going out to do something he loved doing if he ever found himself stuck in life. This push allowed Kai Xi to acknowledge the accident of his father and the doubts of flying his drone. In the end, he kept all the paper notes that his mother gave him in a jar as a way to appreciate and move on.
