Experiencing Interruptions?

Our Painting

Our Painting is a found footage film focused on the ecological crisis. Focusing on issues such as rapidly increasing industrialization since the industrial revolution, biophysical destruction, excessive consumption due to global warming and capitalism, and loss of resources, the film consists of found footage images and a digital audio recording created with the help of artificial intelligence. The film's narrative is based on the visual similarities between nature and anthropogenic pollution. The monologue of a girl painting a landscape, the context established between found footage images and music, enables the film to draw a picture of existential risk with a critical attitude toward climate change and environmental pollution.

Director Statement

What I thought before starting the production of the film Our Painting; was that this film was not like a found footage film created from random images, as in other examples of the genre, but a film with a story in itself, with a structural and tonal language.

For this purpose; I wanted to make a film in which I wanted to show that children, who are not yet adults but are aware of their responsibilities, are the future owners of our world, thinking about environmental problems. When I discovered the “Art Work” collection of Yaroslav Shuraev, a Pexels producer, I realized that I could use these images at the center of the story. It was also important for me that the audience remained in a balanced emotional intensity both visually and audibly while watching this movie. I wanted everyone who dreams of a future for themselves and their children to be influenced by what they see and hear. That's why I tried to be frank in my monologue writing. At the same time, these words needed to be in such a way that they could spill out of a child's mouth. It was also necessary for the character to express what she wanted to say shortly and concisely for it to be a speech with an intensity of emotion. For this reason, I tried to transfer the austerity I made from words to images. In addition, when choosing images, I also paid close attention to the fact that they are compatible with the words, suitable for a certain rhythm and tempo, and images that can ensure continuity with music and sound. The ability of images to embody my narrative was also something I tried to do. I also used visuals that are outside the narrative but represent nature and anthropogenic influence.

During the making of this film, I found myself discovering new things. The most important of these was the creation of a child's voice with the help of artificial intelligence. I spent a lot of time on sound, music, and the interaction of these two elements. I tried to give all the clues necessary for the audience to be able to put together the pieces of this puzzle, but not very much. I also asked him to question the film with the help of the sounds and images he experienced. It was also important that the film tried to paint two different paintings to the audience for three minutes, and at the end tried to make him think. This film was a real challenge for me and I hope the audience finds it satisfying.
