About the Documentary:

Afro Turks were brought to the Ottoman Empire as a labour force in farms earliest in 15th and mostly in the 19th century from Africa. Afro Turks were employed as a labourer in Aegean regions farms and placed in the countryside. Afro Turks received Turkish Citizenship after the proclamation of the republic. They identify themselves as Arabic, Black Turks or Afro Turks. It is estimated to have a population of 5 to 10 thousands of Afro Turks, there is nothing inherited from Africa other than their skin colour. The documentary covers the life experiences of Afro Turks, social difficulties, exclusion and colour discrimination. It presents the society's perspective, daily experiences and memories.
Afro Turks are bothered by the use of insulting language and disturbed by people gazing and sneering. They are one of the minority group in Turkey, ignored, underrepresented, silent, and living as if never existed. They wish to have acceptance in society and more recognition.

Director Biography - Bayram Küçük

Turkish Director

Bayram is currently a Master of Arts student in Cinema and Television in Aydın Adnan Menderes University. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Radio Television and Cinema in the same university in 2020. In 2016 he completed another degree in Radio-Television in Giresun University. He was born in Erzincan Turkey on 11th October 1995. He completed the primary and secondary schools in Erzincan. He creates Fiction and Documentary movies. His movies appeared in international film festivals.As an independent director he focusses on social issues and minorities. His last movie in 2020 Our Only Home raised the voices of ostracized Afro Turks.

Director Statement

In documantary, we wanted to tell the story of the people who were alienated, the people who struggle to be accepted, to be recognized. This is actually a universal issue, I believe it is a personal responsibility to tell these issues somehow.
