Offie Darlington, popularly known as Mr. Darlington Offie, is a multifaceted Nigerian filmmaker and founder of Asabawood. With a career spanning directing, producing, and acting, his notable works include "I'm Awele's Daughter" (sponsored by the British council through ENIFF), "Find Lolu", "Ayele", "The Unseen Wounds", "Not Your Home" "Iron Condemn" and now OUR HEROES PAST. His films have earned recognition across local and international festivals, solidifying his commitment to crafting impactful stories that resonate with audiences.
Our Heroes Past is more than a short film; it is a proof-of-concept for a timely and urgent feature-length narrative that explores the high cost of democracy and the defiant spirit of hope in contemporary Nigeria.
The Vision: From Proof to Feature
This short establishes the core conflict and emotional complexity of its world: the tense friction between political apathy born of generational trauma (embodied by Awele) and the idealism necessary for systemic change (embodied by Obi). Our distinctive visual language—gritty, intimate, and focused on the potent symbolism of objects like the NYSC cap—has been tested and proven effective here. The feature will expand this canvas, using the high-stakes election as a thriller backdrop to explore:
Awele’s journey in greater detail: chronicling her struggle after losing her sight, her brother’s activism, and her father’s heroic final act as an INEC official.
Obi's true identity and mission: turning his surprising reveal from a final moment into a major narrative arc about power, responsibility, and reform.
The broader political machinations hinted at by the incumbent president's torn poster, grounding the personal story within a larger, high-tension political thriller.
Themes: Hope and The Heroes' Past
The film’s title is a direct reference to the national anthem, serving as a powerful thematic anchor. It challenges the audience to consider: What does it truly mean for the labor of our heroes past to not be in vain?
Our Heroes Past is fundamentally a story of redemption and duty. It demonstrates that while the system may be broken, the power of individual choice—represented by Awele finally casting her vote—is the only way to honor those who paid the ultimate price. It's a testament to the idea that the right to vote is not a privilege, but a sacred, hard-won responsibility.
Market Appeal
This project offers an authentic, emotionally charged story with universal themes of political engagement, social justice, and personal sacrifice. It taps into the current global appetite for sophisticated African narratives and high-stakes political drama, delivering a film that is both culturally specific and globally resonant. With the strength of the characters, the clarity of the vision established in this proof-of-concept, and a compelling twist ending, the feature version is positioned to be a powerful and commercially viable film.
