Orange Frames

In an indeterminate future, a world devastated by a nuclear explosion leaves a woman (Małgorzata Kurek) trapped for years in the solitude of a bunker. The lingering radiation prevents her from going outside. Her reality revolves around fragments and echoes of a world now gone. One day, she leaves her shelter, embarking on an unexpected journey. On the surface, she finds herself amidst inexplicable phenomena and meets a mysterious stranger (Paweł Mandziewski).
This experimental work returns to the essence of silent cinema, blending striking visual storytelling with atmospheric soundscapes. The film delves into a post-apocalyptic vision and immense solitude, employing a poetic and symbolic narrative to immerse the viewer in a multifaceted, unfamiliar world reshaped by destruction. Its slow, contemplative pace seeks to provide a requisite space for reflection.
While the festival cinematic version includes audio, the ultimate vision for the film is as a live performance experience, where screenings are accompanied by musicians improvising in real-time.

Director Statement

Silent cinema prioritizes image and sound over dialogue, creating a space for pure visual storytelling. Drawing upon these principles while integrating contemporary artistic techniques, I sought to make a film in which emotions and atmosphere emerge not through spoken words but through the interplay of imagery and sound. As a painter, photographer, and musician, my creative process naturally extends across multiple artistic disciplines. The film’s experimental, abstract, and poetic visual language invites interpretation on symbolic, emotional, and subconscious levels. In times of rapid information exchange, reconnecting with the essence of slow cinema can open a vitally important space for reflection.
The film weaves influences from European and Eastern, Azerbaijani artistic traditions, incorporating mugam, a deeply meditative form of Azerbaijani music into a contemporary soundscape of electronic and instrumental elements. This fusion shapes a distinctive audiovisual identity, offering a cinematic experience anchored in heritage and still modern in artistic expression.
Beyond its artistic exploration, the film addresses broader existential, post-apocalyptic, and dystopian themes. While it may present a vision of an indeterminate future, at its core the film reflects human concerns such as loneliness, the complexities of communication, and the invisible structures that frame and confine our perception of reality.
Rather than imposing a specific interpretation, I invite the viewer into an open experience, allowing space for personal reflection and meaning. This approach is inspired by the works of Andrei Tarkovsky, Abbas Kiarostami, and Ingmar Bergman. Rooted in slow cinema, this work represents an independent and experimental artistic vision, I realized as a director and also as a writer and producer.
