O que faço é música
In “O que faço é música”, the musicians of Hipercirco dressed in parangolés pass through the Penetrável PN27 “Nas quebradas” (1979) by Hélio Oiticica with a performance based on a virtual score formed by the progressive visual perception of the occurrence of gravel in the location (intense and mixed) and bricks (in smaller quantities, but also mixed). The sound gains materiality in the objects that make up the work. They are performed in a free and chaotic improvisation as the musicians enter and exit the work. The reading and guidance of the visual perception of the “construction objects” is similar to practices carried out in the past in proposals such as “Fontana Mix” (1958) by John Cage, where the graphic signs suggested sound inflections, which can be freely attributed to musical occurrences such as volume, tone and pitch. The difference between Cage and Oiticica lies precisely in the specific emphasis of the artistic area to which each of them dedicates themselves. The introduction of the performer or spectator as a necessary element for the performance of the work is present in the works of both. In “What I do is music”, the performers are free from the traditional score, but have a direction: the gaze and perception that move with the passage of the body through the Penetrable. The proposal suggests the possibility of free and moving musical expression with a connection with the environment. The aspects of “being under construction” and “contact with the surroundings” of the musical work here echo in the works of Oiticica. As Oiticica (1986, p. 43) shows, the environmental space invades the penetrable. The sounds and their performers here lead the invasion. They give life to the work that is now music, with a penetrable that becomes the score itself. “At the present moment, I consider two parallel directions that complement each other in the work: one with an architectural sense, the other with a musical sense in their relationships” (OITICICA, 1986, p. 48).
