Director Biography - Gael Garza

My name is Gael Garza, I'm a Latin American filmmaker and I live in Austin Texas. I started becoming interested in filmmaking around 6th grade when I thought I wanted to be an actor, however, I quickly learned I was quite terrible at it. So I turned my attention to behind the camera, ever since 9th grade I've been making short films the largest of which Onions has been selected for 3 film festivals even winning an audience award at Cine Las Americas

Director Statement

I wrote Onions after my grandma told me a story from her childhood. She told me that when she was younger and she wouldn't finish her food her mom would say "Eat your onions or you'll never be beautiful" This story inspired me to write about a world where you needed to eat your onions to be deemed beautiful and the one girl who decided not to. This comes from a place where I think it's good to have differences and we should not all conform to what is the standard all the time. We are beautiful because of our differences, not because everyone does the same thing every day.
