Krista Michaels—Co-Founder and CEO of Retro Raptor, LLC—made her film directorial debut with "One Monday" (2020) after years of being in the entertainment industry—from working in theatre doing sound, set, and poster design to directing behind-the-scenes Blu-ray extras for a horror company.
Krista fell in love with cinema from an early age, as well as the tangible film format as a dual-35mm projectionist and, later, as a film photographer.
She met the star of "One Monday", Brandy Bryant—also her girlfriend—back in southern Virginia where she grew up. Together, the two formed the film production company Retro Raptor, LLC, where various film and TV projects are under way.
"My girlfriend, Brandy Bryant—also the star of "One Monday"—and I were in the process of filming green screen effects work on what would have been our very first short film after years of slowly collecting equipment. This was to be a horror / sci-fi short called "Match Needle". However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and subsequently the stay-at-home order of Colorado, we were forced to halt production.
Nonetheless, we were determined to finally accomplish our goals and achieve our dreams by completing an actual film! So, instead of getting down and abandoning all hope, I spent an afternoon thinking about short concepts that could be filmed in our apartment, with very limited production value and no money.
Brandy had always theorized and contemplated, "what if we're already dead?" We've each had our own individual dark pasts and misfortunes, as well as mutually-shared, horrific experiences... one being the night that we both were startled (quite the understatement, I might add) when we awakened to a fiery computer in a closed space with barely a window.
We both also share dark memories from our childhoods, as well as morbid family events that inspired this film. I only hope that it will inspire, and not depress, the viewers who watch it. Because I truly believe that we're here for a limited time... which is oh-so-precious. Time to move.
My own mortality is a constant reminder that the clock is ticking, and I am very proud to say that I have finally accomplished a fantastic goal of mine—to complete a film. <3 "
