Experiencing Interruptions?

On His Own

Join Oscar and his tag-along friend, a classic rubber duck, as they look for love in this contemporary silent picture. You choose the music! Pick from a collection of six original scores or play your own. Sit back, relax, and let your mind wander!

On His Own is shot and presented in beautiful 5k, entirely in slow motion, with vivid colors professionally adjusted by one of Los Angeles’ leading post-production technicians. Six original scores have been composed to accompany our motion picture.

The production team will supply 300+ individually wrapped earbuds (which we can purchase for less than a dollar) and make them available for the public to use and to keep. Next to our fishbowl of earbuds (for those who might not have their own), we would distribute a cardstock slip on which we would encourage the public to choose their own music, using their own devices, or as we like to call it, “Choose Your Own Musical Adventure.” Because our project is shot entirely in slow motion, it works with almost any music selection and can be quite fun to try different styles. Additionally, the cardstock slip would display QR codes which would direct the public to any of the six original scores we have available if they so choose.

The desired effect is as follows. Our lonely and digitally isolated on-screen protagonist, Oscar, listens to music via earbuds throughout the film as he struggles to connect with others. We hope that the public listening to their own music while Oscar is also listening to presumably the same music, in the same way, will elevate a connection between the protagonist and the viewer while challenging them to think about their own personal connections.

Circa 2015, my team and I searched high and low to find funding for our first feature film. After a few years of the same old string-alongs from potential investors, all of whom turned us down, quietly faded away, or were never interested to begin with, our idle hands got the best of us and brought us to the bizarre and unconventional.

In 2018, we came together with what we had on us, organized ourselves equally, and decided to take some risks, something I was happy to do and I know the rest of the team feels the same. It took us about seven grand (funded mostly by way of my personal Visa card) and several years to complete. The idea was we would go where the big production studios could not and into the untraveled corners of our shared cinematic experience.

In 2020, we completed "ON HIS OWN" a contemporary & interactive silent motion picture! We are over the moon thrilled with our little project that did. Enjoy!

With respect,

Ryan MacKenzie
