'Oleg' is an attempt to paint the most genuine, non-intrusive portrait of Oleg Kudryashov. We were fascinated by his story long before we met – his dissidence and flight from the Soviet Union, his exploits in the art world, his eventual return and Dina’s illness. Ultimately, we chose to avoid explicit narrative in the film and employ a direct and observational style of storytelling, accompanied by our inconspicuous camerawork. Oleg’s life consists only of Dina and his work, and we were disarmed by his openness and their love. While editing, conveying that very spirit became our ultimate objective with the film.
