Director Biography - Christophe Schaeffer

Christophe Schaeffer is a French multidisciplinary artist — writer, poet, philosopher (PhD), visual artist, and lighting designer. His work spans theatre, contemporary dance, visual arts, music, and cinema, exploring perception, time, and the fragile boundaries between image and presence.
Since 2022, he has developed a body of experimental films extending his research into moving images. His cinematic practice revolves around duration, slowness, and the vibration of reality, often using extreme slow motion, long focal lengths, and mobile phone cinematography.
His films have been presented in international festivals and artistic contexts, and pursue a form of poetic cinema of attention, where images remain inhabited by gesture, silence, and lived experience.

Director Statement

Old Man observes a very simple situation: an elderly man walking slowly along a sidewalk with the help of a cane. Around him, pedestrians pass by, absorbed in the rhythm of the city.
Filmed in slow motion, his movement seems to belong to another temporality. While the surrounding world continues to flow, his body advances with a different rhythm, almost detached from the urban agitation.
What interested me was this quiet shift of time. The city appears restless and accelerated, while the old man introduces another duration — one that invites attention and perhaps introspection.
Through this small everyday moment, the film observes the fragile coexistence of two temporalities: the hurried movement of the world, and the slower rhythm of a life that continues in its own time.
