Oh Man!
Oh Man! is a documentary exploring women’s firsthand experiences with male strangers in public spaces—the good, the bad, the unsettling, and the downright hilarious. Through raw, unfiltered accounts, the film sheds light on everyday encounters that range from casual interactions to moments of discomfort, absurdity, and unexpected humor. Blending personal narratives with cultural commentary, Oh Man! examines the invisible weight women carry in public life, questioning what’s considered “normal” and why. Bold, intimate, and unapologetically real, this documentary amplifies voices too often dismissed—while also capturing the ridiculousness of it all.

Rachel Herring is an artist, storyteller, and the creative force behind Basic Bitch Studios, where bold ideas meet unapologetic self-expression. A natural linguist fluent in eight languages, she has always been drawn to the rhythm of conversations, the humor in cultural nuances, and the way people interact—especially when things get weird. Her creative world is shaped by a lifelong obsession with international cinema, layered with the eclectic experiences that come from constantly throwing herself into new places, people, and perspectives.
Her debut documentary, Oh Man!, was born from a simple idea: what if she started filming every ridiculous, awkward, and downright baffling encounter she had with strange men in public? Turns out, she wasn’t the only one with stories. What started as a personal experiment quickly became a hilarious and sometimes unsettling look at the everyday absurdities women deal with—all captured through real moments, real reactions, and the kind of humor that writes itself.
Beyond filmmaking, Rachel’s creative work spans art, fashion, and design, with Basic Bitch Studios serving as a home for her vibrant, no-filter aesthetic. Though Oh Man! is her first official film, she’s spent years hearing the same thing: Why aren’t you already making movies? With this project, she’s finally answering that question. Armed with a camera, a sharp sense of humor, and a knack for capturing what others overlook, she’s just getting started.
Oh Man! started with me—camera in hand—capturing strange, often hilarious encounters with men who seemed to think I was a target just because I was walking in public. From hiding behind bushes to avoid an aggressive guy on the late-night bus in Paris to maliciously being driven in the wrong direction by a cabbie offering us “massage oil,”, your girl-friend suddenly becoming your girlfriend to convince them you don’t even like the male species…these absurd moments made me wonder: what are other women experiencing? As I began gathering stories, I realized this wasn’t just about me—it was a universal experience, one that most women have lived, but one that’s rarely discussed in the open.
The film is a collection of these stories—funny, surreal, and sometimes uncomfortable—but also reflective of larger cultural issues, like the laws around catcalling in France. Oh Man! is a documentary about looking at the bizarre, everyday situations we face as women and making sense of them with humor. It’s about reclaiming space and saying, “Hey, this is real, and we’re going to laugh through it.” This project is the start of my filmmaking journey, but it won’t be the last. My goal is to create films that make people laugh, think, and rethink the way we move through the world.
