I am a passionate Director, Cinematographer and Animator. My film projects include a two part documentary series for the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) which was aired across Nigeria. I have also created and directed music videos, TV series and have shot campaigns for brands like DHL, Union Bank, Belvedere, ARM Pensions, FelaTheConcert, ART X Lagos, African Cable Television (ACTV), Clover Industries Tanzania and Techplus.
In 2017, I released Nigeria's first live-action animated movie titled Dognapped in cinemas across the country. My films have been screened and have won awards in various festivals round the world. Canada, Serbia, Kenya, United Kingdom and Nigeria. I shoot most of my films in English and the African dialect because I believe in the passing on our cultural practices from one generation to next, in Africa and the Diaspora.
While driving through the mainland of Lagos, Nigeria to visit my mother, I witnessed an incident I could not ignore.
A young girl of about six years old was being bullied by boys slightly older than she was and it seemed normal. Her voice was very thin while she fought back and I felt a pain in my heart. I got down from the car and chased the bullies off.
I began to ask myself questions. Why do some people have to go through hard situations and some don't? In Nigeria, the people are resilient. Despite the downhill dive by the government, we remain silent and continue working. There is always hope in Nigeria.
The legendary FELA sang a song in 1978 “SUFFERING AND SMILING”. And in 2018 this is still happening.
Oga Bolaji showcases the resilient, ingenuity of the Nigerian spirit. The way we live, how we dream, our pain, our limitations, yet we continue to strive, we continue to hope and we continue to survive.
