EYE-TO-EYE

We make eye contact with other people all the time, but rarely with other species. This poetic nature documentary takes us on a journey from the Norwegian west coast to the boreal forest in the east. Through intimate moments and exchanged glances it draws us into a sensuous and more-than-human world where there is an unspoken language that seeps out of the terrain.

Director Biography - Siri Linn Brandsøy, Lasse Huldt Pedersen

Filmmakers Siri Linn Brandsøy and Lasse Huldt Pedersen balance between various documentary projects and life as wild sheep farmers by Klavfjorden in Western Norway. Through their films, they explore our relationship with nature, and dive deep into various landscapes and ecosystems to portray the organisms that belong there.

For large parts of the year, they live a semi-nomadic life that offers moments rich in contrast and close to nature. In the short documentary film "EYE-TO-EYE", they weave together the coast and the forest with stunning visuals and calming, immersive soundscapes which give a glimpse into their lives as shepherds with cameras, and points the lens at what they care about the most: the living world.

Director Statement

Our film, ØYEBLIKK (EYE-TO-EYE), depicts a small slice of the human and more-than-human relational world, showing the multitude of life being lived all around us if we give ourselves opportunities to bear witness. At a time when Norway's officials are selling rights to exploit the land- and water-scapes that we know as our homes and collective heritage and that have been essential to how we come to understand ourselves, we need to hear the other voices that disrupt "business as usual". We wanted to remind people that we are part of something bigger than ourselves and inspire them to consider alternative and responsible ways for us to move forward where both humans and nature can thrive.

We conceived of our storytelling method as a kind of stewardship: by practicing close to home; being attentive to the minutiae of lives being lived around us; framing the animal- and plant-lives and land and sea as our collaborators; mirroring the pace of the summer season in our representations; and letting the world unfold in front of our ears and eyes, microphones and cameras. We want our audience to open themselves to the wonder, fragility, and transcendence of our shared home on this incredible planet. By letting it all in, we can be reminded to see ourselves as part of nature. We have a chance to awaken the calling of our inherited duty, responsibility, and obligation to be aware of, cherish, and protect all that is here with us.

We hope it succeeds in amplify the language of the planet and of our more-than-human kin, which so many of us have tuned out, voicing the imperative of being in right relationship with every and all beings that we share our home with.
