James Conlee is a student filmmaker in Orange County attending El Dorado High School Digital Media Arts Academy and FilmED Academy of the Arts. His love for filmmaking sprouts from his need for visual storytelling as it has been something he has felt attached to compared to other forms of communication.
A little more than a year ago, my father was diagnosed with a type 2 meningioma. It was incredibly devastating news to friends and family. Fortunately, his surgery was successful and his recovery was somewhat swift. I’ve always loved sharing stories and I thought this was a great opportunity to create a documentary to share his story with the world. I believe his story is one to look up to and could inspire an audience who are also struggling with overcoming dark times.
After my fathers recovery, he was diagnosed with a form of aphasia which affected his ability to get the right words out and his sentences felt incomplete. However using minimalist animation assisted my dad’s words to create a more coherent story and immersion for the audience.
