OLETHROS [havoc and destruction]
RAW STOCK Film Collective present a video documenting a live film loop projection performance, combining found analogue film, direct animation and experimental sound-making.
As a film loop runs continuously through a projector, visual additions and subtractions are revealed with each new pass, through manual manipulation of the film surface. Using all manner of mark-marking tools from ink and felt pens to knife blades and sandpaper, the visuals evolve over time as the film material slowly transforms.
Simultaneously, a unique pulsating soundscape is created from contact mics, echo and delay modules, an analogue tape recorder and DIY ‘noise boxes’. Blending the film’s original soundtrack with vibrations from the artists’ handiwork and projector itself, alongside audio created using the rudimentary noise-boxes, the improvised soundtrack provides a raw and hypnotic energy.

Live Performance Version
The RAW STOCK Film Collective, formed in 2023 by Canadian filmmakers Peter Sandmark, Trace Nelson, Dave Johnson and Anthony Carr, is a group of artists who celebrate experimental and handmade film and moving image. Possessing a broad skillset and a wide range of interests in their respective practices, they share a common obsession and fierce devotion to the analogue medium, embracing all its expanded possibilities.
Individually, each member of the collective has an extensive exhibiting history, having shown their work in international exhibitions and film festivals, alongside their various teaching experiences. To date, as a collective they have collaborated with FLUX Media Gallery, Canada on both workshops and screening events.
