Director Biography - Daniel Howard-Baker

Currently in my 3rd Year studying BA Film at the University of Westminster, I have worked mainly in directing, editing and writing. In 2017 I produced a short film titled 'All Those in Favour' for the RSC and was screened at the Barbican Centre. In 2020, I edited a film titled 'Gwen' which has gone on to be selected in the Reykjavik Visions Film Festival and the Rameshwaram International Film Festival and for my graduating project 'Finding Laredo' I will be editing. That year I also Juried for the Westminster Film Festival 2020 and have been Co-President of the Film Society from 2020 to the present day. My directing work have mainly been in sparse short bursts that I hope to become more frequent. I directed a short 16mm Sci-fi-Comedy film 'There is Plenty of Space in the Fridge' in my 2nd year but since then have mainly focused on writing feature and future short film projects.

Director Statement

Many people have Nyctophobia - an irrational fear of the dark or night, but what if it became rational? Our main character has a condition that prohibits him from surviving after dark unless he in the boundaries of home so it seems this fear is externalised and realised in this condition. This infers his desire to escape the dark but eventually must realises that the only way out from the dark and the creatures who inhabit it is to face it head on.
