Eddie Ndhlovu’s journey began with the founding of his production company, Talent of Steel, in 2010, which served as the crucible for his creative transformation. Born in January 1982, his directorial debut, the acclaimed low budget film "Sores of Emmanuel," set the stage for his meteoric rise, showcasing his ability to delve into the heart of social and economic challenges faced by the everyday Zimbabwean.
The true magic, however, materialized with the creation of his seminal work, the drama series "Wenera." Hailed as one of Zimbabwe's finest productions, "Wenera" captivated audiences with its raw, honest portrayal of the struggles and triumphs of the nation's lower and middle classes, earning Ndhlovu a revered reputation as a storyteller par excellence.
Ndhlovu's accolades are a testament to his transformative impact. In 2023, he was honored with the prestigious Outstanding Contributor Award in Film and Television industry at the Zimbabwe Film and Television Awards, and his works have garnered over 3 nominations in various categories. Additionally, he received a PERMICAN award in 2015 for Best Music Video Director for his innovative work on Tembalami's "L.O.V.E," and has been recognized with over 4 nominations at the National Arts Merit Awards for his television directorial excellence.
Beyond the silver screen, Ndhlovu has left an indelible mark on the world of commercials, collaborating with esteemed corporate clients such as ECONET, POSB, ZCDC, Steward Bank, and a host of others, showcasing his versatility and adaptability. His global reach extends to symposiums and workshops in prestigious locations like New York, New Jersey, Portland Oregon, Nairobi, Dar-es-Salaam, and Windhoek, where he shares his expertise and inspires the next generation of storytellers.
As Ndhlovu continues to push the boundaries of Zimbabwean cinema with the release of Thandie’s Diary Film released in 2018 which tackled issues of gender-based violence and Netflix Rom-Com Cook Off which he served as a Co-Producer. His latest venture, the TV series "Bundu," produced for 3KTV, is captivating audiences once again. With his unwavering dedication to exceptional storytelling and his ability to transform the mundane into the extraordinary, Eddie Ndhlovu has firmly cemented his place as the alchemist of Zimbabwean cinema, casting a spell on audiences and leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
As Co-Director and writer of this film, my goal was to create a story that explores the complex and often turbulent emotions of the human experience towards important species like the Rhinos. Through the eyes of our ensemble cast, the audience is taken on a journey of self-discovery and pride of how humans can be bonded with wild animals.
My intention was to craft a narrative that feels authentic and relatable, an untold story from Africa by Africans and drawing from my own personal experiences through working with Zimbabwe National Parks. By delving into the nuanced inner worlds of the characters, I hope to evoke a sense of empathy and connection within the viewer.
Visually, I worked closely with my cinematographers to develop a style that complements the film's pensive and introspective tone with an earthy color palette that aimed to immerse the audience in the emotional landscape of the story.
Ultimately, this film is a labor of love - a sincere attempt to capture the joys, sorrows, and complexities of the human condition. My hope is that it will resonate with festival audiences and inspire thoughtful discussions around the universal experiences that unite us all.
