Director’s Statement – Nurses Do It Better
Nurses Do It Better is a film born out of perseverance and sheer willpower. The entire production was financed through the final distribution of my Pell grant, which I had maxed out at $150,000. Funding arrived in $2,500 installments every six months, aligned with the start of each new semester. That rhythm dictated our shoots as well—every six months, we gathered for a single 12-hour studio rental. Across two such days (one of them an all-nighter), we captured everything we possibly could.
As I’ve said:
“[For a first film,] Whatever situation a Producer is in is what the Producer must persevere through.”
Most of the cast and crew volunteered their time—friends from Facebook, strangers who answered calls, and in one case, even a cinematographer I hired straight off the street on shoot day. That spirit of chance and courage defined the project. Actors were told simply: be ready. We couldn’t afford rehearsals, but many rehearsed with their scene partners independently. We lost actors, gained new ones, and adapted constantly. Over 40 people ultimately came together to make it possible.
As the writer, I wanted every word on the page to survive. As the producer, I had to compromise. And as the director and editor, I was forced to rewrite the film entirely around the footage we had. That took six months of re-imagining—but the story found its shape there.
This film is not only a product of limited means, but also of immense heart. Donated music from generous artists gave it vibrancy. The diverse cast we assembled reflects the reality of U.S. healthcare more honestly than most films dare to. And when I personally wound up in the ER for the same condition our story depicts, it cemented for me just how deeply personal this work is.
In the end, Nurses Do It Better is about doing the impossible. Whether or not it finds commercial success, it already achieved something remarkable: it exists. The cast, crew, and supporters proved that art is born when people believe in it, even against all odds.
Thank you for considering our film.
