Director Statement

Not THAT Rich is a realistic drama feature, adapted from the best-selling novel of the same title by Belinda Lei. It tells the story of Sherry, a young Asian-American girl born into an immigrant family, as she navigates her growth and search for identity.

Our new home is now in the land we longed for, but where do we truly belong? This is a question that resonates deeply with many Chinese immigrants who settle in the United States. Beyond the initial excitement of arrival, we confront a profound search for identity. Neither fully recognized by mainstream America nor always by our own heritage, Chinese immigrants, like many Asian Americans, have become a special group. We may achieve the American dream on paper, but upon reflection, we often find ourselves navigating a complex maze of belonging, despite holding American citizenship, a prosperous life, and a good education. Through this film, my heartfelt wish is to envision a path where we can reconnect with our true selves in the journey ahead.
