Nostos and Algos
1922 - 2022
100 years since the Asia Minor Disaster
nostalgia, the [nostaljía]: the mental pain and bittersweet feelings caused by the inability to enter longing to return to the homeland, to a favorite place or to pleasant situations experienced in childhood.
nostalgia: nostos (=return) + algos (=pain)
On the night of September 13-14, 1922, Mana Smyrna was set on fire. With the destruction of the famous city, the cycle of the presence of the Greeks in Asia Minor ended after 35 centuries. Hellenism was definitively found outside Ionia, Pontus, Cappadocia.
The tribute film from the Primary School of Agios Dimitrios honors the 100 years since the Asia Minor Disaster. We have not forgotten. Nothing has been forgotten. We honor the people, the refugees, the Hellenism that was uprooted. For the souls lost. Hellenism and Asia Minor are concepts identified in historical time and this makes the plague of destruction even greater. Philosophy, knowledge, culture, science, tradition, traditions and customs are the greatest heritage we have. And this makes our homelands unforgettable. Not lost homes but forgotten.
