Nikolina Riselius is a filmmaker from Umeå, Sweden, who focuses on short, narrative works and has produced, written, directed and edited several projects. She previously studied both theatre and filmmaking and is now pursuing directing and writing at Prague Film School, in the Czech Republic.
In 2023 she started up a film firm, Riselius Film, to deepen her journey in film and production. Under the company, she’s completed three financed short films, which has thus far accumulated 17 awards and festival selections. Her second short, “Här är inget”, won at Novemberfestivalen(2024), the nationals in Swedish youth film, where it also garnered recognition from the Swedish Film Institute.
All her works have had a foot in some supernatural or unnatural aspects, which is where her passion within film and storytelling lies and is eager to explore the strangeness deeper in future projects. She's drawn to narratives that step outside the real world as, for her, it sparks deeper engagement and opens up new possibilities for exploring themes and stories when it’s unbound.
This film has grown from a self-reflection, which also became a mirror for a wider societal condition. In an age of constant stimulation and endless distractions, the story explores how we ambivalently let media consumption trap us. Most dangerous is that it has reached a level where it just feels natural. I’ve constantly found myself bent over a screen, in need of something interesting, entertaining… an escape. Even with full awareness of the problem, “doomscrolling,” that quiet and willing trance to dream time away. There's a comfort in something that’s, for the moment, quick, easy, and inconsequential. It becomes a habit. It becomes a waking dream.
I wanted to convey the idea of entrapment, told through a character who literally gets stuck in her own mental prison. Grounded in everyday elements of media, screen devices, and the unending search for distractions, the film gradually descends into darker territory. As the story unfolds, reality frays at the edges, blurring the line between what’s real and what might just be imaginary.
I wanted to create something atmospheric and claustrophobic. The minimal dialogue brought an interesting challenge, pushing visuals and sound to carry the weight of the storytelling. I hope the result is something both close and unsettling. A reflection of how easy it is to drift into a comfortable trap.
