Director Statement

I have always loved the medium of film for its ability to elevate often unseen narratives, and reveal to others that each of their stories matter deeply, no matter where or what they come from. But it was only recently that I realized I had never been able to fully embrace my own story of where I’ve come from- and how could I tell others that their stories mattered if I didn’t believe that of my own?

Nine Months to November is based upon my mother's story when she had me as a young girl at the age of 16. Every decision made for production was rooted in the truth of the actual events- we shot in locations that were prominent in my mother's life at this time, dressed the set and wardrobe with items from my family's home, and I listened to the memories of my mother and grandmother to truthfully script the dialogue and moments you see on screen.

Bringing this film to life has been more healing than I could have ever imagined- screening the film side by side with my mother, while she had tears in her eyes, is a moment I will always cherish. Most of all this journey has deepened my passion for the quieted stories of underrepresented peoples. More than ever, now is the time to elevate the unseen stories of women- to give those that have long been silenced, a space to finally share their voice.
