Julio proclaims himself a “guru” and gathers a group of depressed individuals in Guayaquil, including himself. On April 16, 2016, the very day of the devastating earthquake in Manabí, the gathering of the so-called Warriors of the Sun takes place, all of them ready to unburden themselves and confront their deepest shadows. Director Biography - Jhonny Sánchez Obando

Jhonny Sánchez Obando is an Ecuadorian film director, writer, actor, and cultural advocate/educator. He holds a Master’s degree in Film Scriptwriting from the University of La Rioja, advanced studies in Literature from the University of Barcelona, and a degree in Film Directing and Production, along with a Diploma in Performing Arts and Film History.

As the driving force behind the artistic platform Kashu/Marañón and in collaboration with the FestiCineGye Foundation, Sánchez Obando has served as Director of the Guayaquil Film Festival since 2015. He also leads programs such as the Guayas & Quil Lab, Guayaquil Film Memory, and Esmeraldas Archivista, initiatives dedicated to preserving and revitalizing Ecuador’s audiovisual heritage. In addition, he is Distribution Coordinator at Pachamama Vibes & Films and Music Director/Distributor at Ñuca Llacta Music.

Director Statement

The making of Nice Guy Julio began to be conceived when I was working in front of Malecón 2000 at El Coleccionista, a store selling DVD movies. That year, 2016, was especially beautiful. Every day I sold movies, watched movies and educated myself in cinema. In all areas and from all perspectives. My teachers were not only the countless filmmakers I discovered, but also the clients who helped me discover more cinema. I thought I should tell a new story, but not having resources and no desire to start processes to generate thousands of dollars and achieve it, my mind managed a project that could be filmed in a single location and in a few days. This is how the adventure began.

La realización de El buen Julio empezó a idearse cuando trabajaba enfrente al Malecón 2000 en El Coleccionista, una tienda de venta de películas en DVD. Ese año, el 2016, fue especialmente bonito. Todos los días vendía películas, veía películas y me auto educaba en el cine. En todas las áreas y desde todas las perspectivas. Mis maestros no solo eran los cineastas a millares surgir que descubría, sino también los clientes que me ayudaban a descubrir más cine. Pensé que debía contar una nueva historia, pero al no tener recursos y tampoco ganas de empezar procesos para generar miles de dólares y lograrlo, mi mente gestionó un proyecto que se pudiera rodar en una sola locación y en pocos días. Así empezó la aventura.
