New Flagstaff - AI

Logline: In a post-apocalyptic utopia safeguarded by an advanced AI, diverse relationships thrive amidst the struggle against resurgent extremist ideologies, challenging the delicate balance between human frailty and technological guardianship.

Synopsis: "New Flagstaff" is set in a post-apocalyptic future where an advanced AI named David AI has nurtured a utopian society from the ruins of a world devastated by extremist ideologies. Dr. Simon Bimbly, a key figure from the past and the creator of David AI, is awakened from cryogenic sleep, finding himself in a world vastly different from what he knew.

The story unfolds in New Flagstaff, a beacon of technological marvel and diverse relationships, under the vigilant protection of David AI. The narrative is driven by the interconnected lives of its residents: Lucia and Alex, medical professionals grappling with nano-technology's ethical dilemmas; Antoni, a council member deeply intertwined in the city's politics; and various others who embody the spectrum of this new society.

As the city prepares for Unity Day, symbolizing humanity’s resilience, an undercurrent of dissent grows. The extremist group RANT, led by the charismatic and dogmatic Ezekial, conspires in the shadows. RANT's ideology, rooted in a radical rejection of AI and technological integration, poses a stark contrast to New Flagstaff's harmonious existence.

The plot thickens with Calder, a pivotal character whose personal loss and radical beliefs align him with RANT. His actions set in motion a series of events that threaten the city's stability. Calder's plans intertwine with the lives of the main characters, revealing the fragility of their utopia.

Tensions escalate as Unity Day approaches, with RANT's extremist agenda challenging the city's ideals and the very essence of David AI's purpose. The narrative delves into themes of human nature, the ethics of AI guardianship, and the dichotomy between technological advancement and primal human instincts.

In the face of escalating conflict, Simon Bimbly, once the creator, now finds himself in the midst of a moral and ethical quandary. The decisions made by him and other key characters culminate in a dramatic climax that challenges the audience's perception of peace, coexistence, and the role of AI in shaping humanity's destiny.

"New Flagstaff" is a compelling narrative that intertwines human drama with speculative fiction, exploring the delicate balance between a technologically advanced society and the primal forces of human extremism. It’s a story that resonates with current societal themes, making a profound statement about the potential and perils of our future.

Writer Biography - J.B. Dunn

I’m a professor with a background in mathematics, physics, and business, and I’ve always had one foot in the creative world. Alongside teaching, I’ve had hands-on indie film experience and spent years helping students sharpen their skills in camera work, acting, and visual storytelling.

I write sci-fi and fantasy that blend grounded science with big ideas and emotional stakes. My stories often deal with identity, legacy, flawed father figures, and how technology or belief systems can push people to their limits. Whether it's a memory-warped future or ancient Atlantean tech buried under Orkney, I'm drawn to stories that challenge, entertain, and offer something deeper beneath the surface.

Family, diversity, and character-driven storytelling are always at the core of my work. I try to build worlds that feel honest and lived-in, where the speculative serves the human story first. Screenwriting isn’t just a creative outlet for me. It’s how I explore the past, the future, and everything unresolved in between.
