Nothing But a Human

This documentary is about a young Gender Fluid Artist, Hiten Noonwal, who happens to also belong to the LGBTQ community as well.

His journey as an artist started very young as he was growing up in a village situated at the Haryana-Delhi border in a Haryanvi Family.
From designing dressing for Local Ramleela Cosplay of his village to reaching NID Ahmedabad as an Apparel Design student showed him a way to use his artistic talent to not only express himself through his art, also to use it as a weapon to fight his social battle and bring awareness in the society.

Director Biography - Swati Jaiswal

This is Swati Jaiswal, Director of my debut documentary, 'Nothing But a Human'. I am an alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune from Film Editing, and editing for the past 7 years in the Mumbai Industry. Editing feature-length fiction and documentaries increased my interest to shoot a documentary myself.
Before joining Film Institute, I was a Fine arts student in Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi for a graduate program that exposed me to different forms of Arts and the people associated with them. To make my first documentary film about an artist is very much a reason for it.
My experience assisting different projects from a Storyboard artist to an Editor has helped me understand design and structuring to some level which has helped me make this documentary as well.
Editing has taught me not only to use the camera and digital technicalities properly to save time and money but also it has helped me to pull off a project a lot by myself which is a great asset for independent filmmaking.

Director Statement

I, Swati Jaiswal, a debut director with my documentary, “Nothing But a Human" chose this subject to talk about the journey of a Gender Fluid LGBTQ Artist, Hiten Noonwal because when I saw his work I was very fascinated by them as I researched about him, I realized he actually belongs to a village and the kind of performances and portraits he does look very International, which is diagonally opposite of the social stature he has grown up in. That inspired me to explore the themes and stories behind his artworks as an LGBTQ Artist. How patriarchal social norms affect all genders, and the outcome of it in his case particularly because he has art to express it in a constructive way. And does his works have a bigger meaning and will they have a longer effect on society is my quest through this film
