Director Biography - Erik Semashkin

Arrived from Ukraine in France in 2012, I am a young director with more than ten short films to my credit, selected and awarded internationally.

I want to diversify and explore new forms of filmmaking, working on several genres. However, this variety of films has a common background.

Whether it’s about the environment or international conflicts, I remain sensitive to current events while telling my story.

Arrivé d'Ukraine en France en 2012, je suis un jeune réalisateur avec plus d'une dizaine de courts-métrages à mon actif, sélectionnés et primés à l'international.

Je souhaite me diversifier et explorer de nouvelles formes de réalisation, en travaillant sur plusieurs genres. Cependant, cette variété de films possède un fond commun.

Que ce soit sur l'environnement ou les conflits internationaux, je reste sensible à l’actualité, tout en racontant mon histoire.

Director Statement

Like a moral fable, Nature Attack tells the story of how a simple piece of human waste disrupts the entire food chain.

The waste triggers a war that would normally go unnoticed by a passerby. However, here, the viewer finds himself at the heart of the conflict, witnessing the harmful effects of our pollution.

I hope to immerse myself as much as possible in the narrative of my films, in order to sense their smells, their textures, and to experience their environment. For example, for the sets of Nature Attack, I used elements collected directly from a forest. This was to create a situation in which the waste attacks me as much as it attacks the animals. You have to take the side of nature, to the point of being afraid of humans.

À la manière d’une fable morale, Nature Attack raconte comment un simple déchet humain dérègle toute la chaîne alimentaire.

Le déchet déclenche une guerre, qui passerait normalement inaperçue aux yeux d’un promeneur. Seulement, ici le spectateur se trouve au cœur du conflit, témoin des effets nocifs de notre pollution.

J’espère m'immerger le plus possible dans la diégèse de mes films, afin d’en sentir les odeurs, les textures, d’en expérimenter l’environnement. Par exemple, pour les décors de Nature Attack, j’ai utilisé des éléments directement collectés dans une forêt. Afin de bâtir une situation, dans laquelle le déchet m'agresse autant qu’il agresse les bêtes. Il faut prendre le parti de la nature, au point d’en avoir peur de l’humain.
