MRS. TAYLOR'S SHOW AND TELL - A PRINCE STORY

Disabled filmmaker Victor Dean has a knack for engaging with extraordinary people in an endearing and down-to-earth way. Mrs. Taylor’s Show & Tell chronicles a chance meeting with His Royal Badness, Prince, back in 2001. This animated short tells the tale of a chance encounter-turned-serendipitous elevator ride with The Purple One.

Before I reached puberty, I was a lifelong Prince fan. The spoils of being a young kid raised by his grandparents came with having aunts and uncles (more like sisters and brothers) who were constantly exploring the culture craze of the 80s and always took me along for the ride.

I was 8 years old the first time I listened to Prince’s “Uptown” in a covert corner of my grandparent’s basement. The sound of his falsetto screams, funky bass-lines, and guitar riffs carved a path into my own musical exploration, and when I discovered that Prince was a self-taught musical prodigy, I wanted nothing more to do with the standard Popstars of the time - The Purple One was it for me - so much that I couldn’t wait to share my love for his music with my third-grade teacher Mrs. Taylor and fellow classmates. Twenty years later, I would have a chance encounter with His Royal Badness to tell him all about it.

Mrs. Taylor’s Show & Tell is a comedic, slice-of-life, coming-of-age tale of boy meets idol. As I was developing the concept of this film, I was certain that animating it was the way to go simply because no actor or impersonator can do Prince justice - or at least not with the budget I had to work with. My singular goal for this project was to memorialize the unforgettable elevator ride I had with Prince Rogers Nelson.
