Director Statement

My name is Nyiko Hlongwane, the director of Mr. Moloi, a South African 2020 short horror/ paranormal film. I would really like to start by acknowledging the team I’ve worked with in this project, under extreme circumstances, as we started recording half of the project prior the COVID-19 Lockdown in South Africa, we had to wait for a lengthy four months to resume and complete the entire shoot. It was difficult shooting under the strict Lockdown regulations.

Hence we successfully managed to adhere to the laws and safety precautions on set, in that I thank my team for being patient in order to finish the film.

Regarding this film, I had to read the script with the key creative team of the project including the cast, in order to identify challenges prior shooting, we had to breakdown the script, highlight everything I need to ensure we have a perfect shoot, and this made it easier for me when agreeing to locations of the-Film, it was indeed a fun experience since this was my first film as a director, I also drafted my shortlist, storyboard and went through videos of actors who visually auditioned for the film and I successfully identified the best ones, this includes the crew, which in this regard was a skeleton crew.

When everything was set for principal photography I was now ready to start directing, the shoot that was challenging was at the mine dump, we started recording from 6am till 17h00pm under 32 degrees Celsius, without generators for power supply, we had to go down a very high hill to charge camera batteries in a nearby house, but at the end of an exhausting shoot we successfully concluded the shoot and I’m impressed it was well recorded.

It took me 8 days to finally conclude the shoot with only two reshoots that I’m glad I did and from that point I personally went for a three months post production, and a couple of ADR done to fix sound.

I worked with the producer, sound engineer, to ensure that we have a good sound, since visuals were perfect, as I used a Canon 700D to shoot the entire film, and I used Adobe premier pro CC and After Effects to edit the film, then later Photoshop for posters.

It was easy to edit since I personally Directed the film according to how I will edit the film. I finished editing on the 05th Of December 2020 and did my first private screening with key creative team on the 15th of December 2020 and with reviews from them, only minor errors I had to go back and fix and which I did.

On the 09th of January 2021, I conducted my first official private screening, which I invited the cast and crew to watch and rate the film on a private location. And this was the first official screening with large crowd to carefully watch and critic the film. At the end of the screening, everyone was happy with their contribution and the overall content.

Now I’ve identified the first stage of marketing the content, which I would be pleased to see this project being accepted for a film festival, in a catergory of short film, it can either be local or international as I proud myself that, this is beyond ordinary.

This was my first film as director and I believe more is coming from my side I that directors chair.
