Mr. Byrnes
"Age is no barrier, when the frame is fit and the engine strong."
In 2016, when the bed of his 2003 Ford F150 pickup truck began to show signs of rust and corrosion, Mr. Byrnes, a retired contractor, then in his eighties, devised a plan to restore it. After months of hard work in his basement workshop, crafting a new wooden bed, his ambitious project became a manifest embodiment of an older man’s perseverance, stamina, and vision.

Deborah Vatcher made her first film at the age of 12, while enrolled in a summer arts program in the public schools of Rochester, NY. With ready access to Kodak super 8 cameras and film, she created a series of short films, enlisting her younger sisters as actors, and her parents as drivers. Now retired from her medical practice, she completed a filmmaking course at the Harvard Extension School at Harvard University in the fall of 2021, and documentary film classes at Emerson College in 2023. She continues to study the art of filmmaking, editing, and music production through a variety of courses and programs available online, and is currently a student at the online film academy The Art of Documentary.
Mr Byrnes is my neighbor—a man now in his nineties, whom I’ve known for many years. Since he first restored it, I’ve been fascinated by the truck he drives around town—an old 2003 Ford F150. In 2016, as the truck began to show its age, with rust and corrosion chewing through the back bed, Mr. Byrnes settled on a plan to restore it. He crafted a replacement bed in his basement workshop from planks of solid oak, using a variety of tools, such as planers, saws, and routers, and assembled the pieces on the Ford’s frame. There is no other truck on earth just like the one Mr Byrnes drives around town. And in the fall of 2024, we met in his yard one day, and he told me all about it. I hope you enjoy the film, thank you.
