An ordinary middle-aged factory worker, Ilya Samsonov, lives in Chelyabinsk. He makes wheels for KAMAZ trucks and, having just come to work, he already dreams of returning home as soon as possible.
Ilya talks about himself, painting a picture in an art workshop. He does not tell his colleagues about his love for art and drawing - they will not appreciate it, and maybe even ridicule it. The film crew invites Ilya to leave his comfort zone and exhibit his work right in the workshop at the enterprise. Ilya is skeptical, but agrees to the experiment.
The film crew exhibits his paintings at the factory, Ilya looks at all this with great excitement. The director invites all the colleagues of the hero to the pictures, asks to evaluate their beauty and depth, the men give their assessment. Factory workers are told that these are not just someone else's paintings, these are paintings by their colleague Ilya Samsonov. Colleagues are surprised and with great interest begin to ask the hero about his work.
Workplace of Ilya Samsonov, one day before the performance. The director approaches Ilya and asks him to act in films, the actor's task is simple - to pretend to be a factory worker who paints pictures, and then pass off other people's work as his own. Elijah agrees.
The director with Ilya in an art workshop take an express master class from a real artist. How to hold the brush correctly, how to sit correctly to be believable. The failed shots of the first part of the film are shown, as Ilya says that the whole idea is nonsense: “Well, I’m not an actor, I can’t lie plausibly.”
After showing the pictures to the factory workers, the director and the hero tell the workers that it was all a set-up - the film needed a genuine reaction from the peasants. Someone laughs, someone gets upset, someone condemns the film crew and Ilya: “Don’t lie, harsh men live in the Urals!”
