Director Biography - Martina Reese

Martina Reese arrived at filmmaking later than many. After an extended career as a graphic designer, she was delighted to discover at 50 that filmmaking no longer necessarily involved carting around heavy equipment, using expensive film stock that required lab processing, and mustering a large crew of people with specialized expertise. And so, the guerrilla filmmaker was born. Since her 2010 debut shorts "Vicky Gets Dressed" and "One Boy" (starring her children and their friends), Ms. Reese has steadily expanded her body of work and mastery of the medium with sleeper hit shorts such as "The Swimmer" (2012); "Bathroom" (2016), "Move," "Pity," and "Trigger Point" (2017); and "Big Break," "Slow Me Down," and "Twins" (2018). Currently in production, Reese's new films "Floating Man" and "The Librarians" are due for release in early 2019.

Director Statement

I'm excited by the challenge of making the best possible films using unpaid and underpaid actors (often with little previous experience), free/offbeat locations, small crews of passionate film-making junkies and modest, highly portable equipment. I want to capture in film fleeting and unexpected events and experiences that reveal things about the inner lives of the characters. In film-making, I've finally found something that absorbs every aspect of my attention: aesthetic, technical, organizational, social. I love the process as much as the product and am happiest when simultaneously managing several projects at different stages.
