Director Biography - Manuel Hai

Manuel Hai (birth name Manuel Julián Escobar Díaz) was a performing artist before becoming a filmmaker. His writings have obtained national or international recognition (“Sacrófagos”, Spain; “Soy El hombre”, and “Avistamiento”, Colombia).

His film "Conjecture" won Best SciFi in Ontario, Canada (Couch Film Festival), and "The New Artist" was Official Selection in Brooklyn SciFi Festival, as well as Best VFX in Criaturas Fest. "Letaníos" (honor mentioned in Italy) was the first short film exhibited in national movie theaters (2024). His second feature film project, Final Jeopardy, is still waiting for preproduction, but his first feature ("Meinong's Jungle") is almost in post-production.

SevenPhotonsFilms (7FF) has produced several of his stories; always on themes, backgrounds, dilemmas, or hidden places about the human condition: identity, consciousness, perception. He has been a beneficiary of the District Stimulus Program of Bogotá and the Colombian Ministry of Culture, related to the film industry, among other prizes and awards.

The Director (Manuel Hai) was in Europe and US in 2022 (October-November) promoting several projects.

Director Statement

Morphallaxis is based on "Cempasúchil", an art piece by Yuyo Del Valle, who's also the star and Art Director of the short film; this piece was made between Mexico and Colombia. I wrote the original script and the first screenplay without any words, a purely audiovisual experience without any linguistic obstacle. Later, we preserved the absence of spoken words.

This short film was part of the project "3shortsBquill", an ambitious (7FF) initiative that sought to be able to film 3 short films in three days in 3 different municipalities inside Atlántico, Colombia. The intense preproduction of the three short films was made with the same team, at the same time, in 2024. The shooting took part in Puerto Colombia, Barranquilla, and Soledad, using several locations for each film.
