Mooresville

Mooresville is a documentary set in rural Ohio, following a filmmaker and her father as they piece together the life of Gary Moore, an estranged brother and uncle who, before his death, built a private 1940s and 1950s-themed town on eight secluded acres. As they uncover Gary’s reclusive legacy through the memories of Joe, his devoted friend and caregiver, the film becomes a layered exploration of family estrangement, unspoken grief, and the imaginative power of nostalgia. Featuring deeply personal arcs from the filmmaker, her emotionally reserved father, and the posthumous presence of Gary himself, Mooresville captures a race against time to preserve one man’s dream before it’s dismantled and lost forever.

Director Statement

Angela Vaut's vision for Mooresville is that it invites viewers to reflect on the silences and stories within their own families, and how memory, imagination, and emotional inheritance shape identity. She hopes the film encourages conversations about estrangement, grief, and the complexity of legacy, not as issues to resolve, but as experiences to hold with care. By showing how one man built an entire world in private, the film offers a meditation on the human need for meaning and connection, even in solitude. Its influence lies in fostering empathy, curiosity, and intergenerational understanding.
