Mones

Mones was born out of collaboration, friendship, and a shared desire to tell a different kind of trans story. At its core, this film is Betti’s vision: she co-wrote the script and embodies Cici with a mix of humor, honesty, and vulnerability that is our story's heartbeat. Our work as a team was to surround that vision with care, craft, and a mission to... create a fabulous party.

Together, we wanted to capture the exhilarating messiness of early transition: the small milestones, the awkward encounters, the rush of self-discovery. So often, trans narratives on screen are framed around loss or hardship. With Mones, we set out to celebrate joy, community, and the absurd comedy of becoming. The film takes place in a fraternity house, a symbolic monument of traditional masculinity, yet within that unlikely space, Cici and her friends carve out a space of belonging. That juxtaposition, between the rigid structures of gender and the expansive freedom of chosen family, was central to our vision.

Humor guides the film as much as heart. We believe laughter is a tool of survival, a way of puncturing the heaviness of transition stories and letting in light. The moments of banter, missteps, and messiness as a context for transformative milestones. When Cici discovers her body changing in real time, the moment is both comic and profound, her joy amplified by the voices around her chanting in celebration.

We made Mones as a love letter to trans girlhood, to resilience, and to the communities that hold us through our most vulnerable beginnings. Our hope is that audiences walk away with Cici’s joy still ringing in their ears: the sound of someone stepping fully into herself, and being cheered on every step of the way.
