Reed Barcellos grew up on Long Island, New York raised by his Latino father and surrounded by a strong Latino immigrant community that allowed him to develop a brazen authenticity. An early exposure to on-set work led him to pursue a BA in film production at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he took every chance he had to develop his ability as a director.
Now living in Hollywood, Reed was recently selected for Sony's Social Impact Filmmaking Lab, a 25 thousand dollar grant sponsored by Sony, to make his next short film.
Reed is ready to get back behind the camera and continue to tell stories that utilize the genre elements of his favorite films, mysteries and thrillers, to challenge his characters at their moral core.
The idea for "Missing" came when I was driving through California's central valley it was early morning and the sun rose onto a group of men lining up in a fruit grove. I imagined a man finding one of the workers collapsed in the hot sun, that body disappearing and the mystery that would ensue.
It was important to me that I told a story that focused on Enrique, the farm supervisor, an outsider to both the workers and the farm owners. I wanted something that would challenge his moral character– forcing him into a dire and uncertain circumstance. I felt strongly about centering "Missing" around the experience of migrant workers. In my own work, I find myself drawn to emotional authenticity– something that I aimed to capture by using a functioning farm and background talent that were migrants to the United States.
"Missing" is inspired by films like CHINATOWN and Y TÚ MAMA TAMBIEN and their observational but perspective driven style. I wanted the audience to experience "Missing" at the same time as Enrique. "Missing" was a way for me to explore my own identity while contending with the continued assault on Latinos and all other immigrants in the United States.
