Director Biography - Tom Watts

Tom is a non-binary and Neurodiverse Writer, Director and Cinematographer.

Tom’s work as a Cinematographer spans Features, Commercials and music videos.

Alongside their production work Tom also writes for BSC magazine subsidiary Cinegirl Magazine.

As a Neurodiverse artist, spoken language is my second language. My first and most fluent language is visual language. It is the world I live in and dedicate my life to mastering. “Show, don’t tell,” is a core principle of storytelling and cinematography. By showing our story and allowing the audience to live vicariously in the experiences of others through the lens of their own life experiences we give them the opportunity to evolve their perspectives.

Director Statement

We live in a society with an empathy problem.

It’s a rare trait that someone can understand and empathise with another persons lived experience. It is even rarer that someone can do that with someone who is diametrically opposed.

If you can’t understand the ‘why?’ of someone else's position then how will any societal splits ever be repaired?

Misery Loves Company explores the ‘what if?’ of approaching a divisive and controversial current issue from the perspective of confident compassion. There is a bigger picture and it’s not painted with hatred.
