Miserere Tui
An old Catholic boarding school in Europe. From the back row of the choir, Julian both worships and resents Mikael — the gifted one who was given everything. But Mikael's gift has a secret. Deep beneath the chapel, in a forbidden crypt, a golden moth glows inside a glass jar — the true source of his celestial voice. Julian watches the ritual. When Mikael leaves, Julian slips inside to claim the secret for himself. He cuts his finger, lets his blood spill, and swallows the whole blood-soaked moth as he thinks one wing might not be enough.
Soon after, Julian stands as soloist for the first time. Just as he begins to sing, something stirs deep inside his throat. He clutches his neck in panic. From the pews, Mikael watches him — calm, almost serene. As if he had always known.
Miserere Tui — Have mercy on you. But in the end, the film grants mercy to no one.

There is something I have watched for a long time. The face a person wears at the moment of collapse. People break not only before envy or fear, but before love as well — and before emotions too vast to hold. When faced with something one cannot contain, a person becomes the most honest. I want to make films that look at that face for a long time, without beautifying it and without offering easy pity.
The clues to my stories I find in myth, religion, and old works of literature. I believe the archetypes of storytelling are already written there. But the more refined a tool becomes, the simpler the maker's thinking tends to grow. I want to stand on the other side of that current, and make stories that are complex, uncomfortable, and deliberately unresolved.
