Mijo is a young dreamer, suddenly blessed with the gift of King Midas. However, his ability has a unique twist: whatever and whoever he touches is stylishly pimped up.

Mijo is a Mexican fairy tale that seeks positive representation of racialized people, the queer and LGBTQ+ community, and decolonial narratives through the lens of fantasy.

Shot in the uncharted streets of Mexico City, Mijo is a colorful and fun short film inspired by the pachuco fashion from the 1940s. The film is a collaboration with independent local artists, showcasing traditional Mexican tailoring, fashion, music, and illustrations all in one project. By prioritizing a community-driven production model and working with local creatives, Mijo promotes sustainable filmmaking practices and responsible consumption, emphasizing the value of handmade craftsmanship and ethical artistic collaboration.

Channeling the city's edgy and urban spirit, Mijo reinterprets the myth of King Midas through a modern Mexican lens, inviting reflection on greed, materialism, and the consequences of excessive consumption. Through its vibrant aesthetic and social commentary, the film not only celebrates identity and cultural heritage but also raises awareness of the environmental and ethical impact of unchecked consumerism.

Director Biography - Mazdey

Directora de cine y publicidad. Nacida en México, residente permanente en España. Socia ODA y CIMA.

Con más de 9 años de experiencia en la producción de videos para artistas, así como en proyectos personales.

Gracias a su trayectoria, diversas universidades y plataformas han confiado en ella como conferencista y tallerista en el género del fashion film con perspectiva decolonial.
Además, ha tenido el honor de ser invitada como curadora y jurado en prestigiosos festivales internacionales, incluyendo GRRL HAUS CINEMA en Berlín, Luna de Cortos en Riego de la Vega, León y el Madrid Indie Film Festival, España. Su trabajo ha sido publicado en medios como Directors Notes, I-D Italia, Kaltblut Magazine, Neo2 Magazine.

Sus films han sido seleccionados y premiados en mas de 120 festivales internacionales de cine y moda, como:

Born in Mexico, Mazdey currently lives in Spain. She received a Bachelor in Graphic Design from the University of Guadalajara, though she has always had an interest in cinema and filmmaking. Through an appreciation of fashion film, she has explored the audiovisual language by creating stories that reflect her own vision of the world.
With over 8 years of experience in producing video content for artists, designers and fashion brands, she has been engaged by several universities and platforms to discuss fashion film as a genre through her work as a director and as official jury in the documentary section of the Festival Internacional Luna de Cortos 2023, Riego de la Vega, León, Spain.

Director Statement

The film is a tribute to my love for magic realism. I wanted to create something with a narrative, but with a touch of surrealism to it. I also wanted to make sure that it reflected the Mexico of today, where tradition and modernity meet, and showcase the wonderful creative talent we have here.”
