Director Biography - Travis Shields

Dennis Fuentes's journey as a singer/songwriter started with piano lessons when he was six years old.  For several years, he was schooled in the works of the classical masters: Mozart, Bach, and Chopin.  In his early teens, he picked up an acoustic guitar and, after a few lessons, started playing just for fun. It wasn’t until his move from his native New York City to Chicago in 1992 that a more serious interest in songwriting started to surface.

Inspired by his roots-rock heroes — including Barenaked Ladies, Hootie and the Blowfish, Blue Rodeo, and The Freddy Jones Band — Dennis began writing songs and performing at open mic nites in pubs and taverns throughout Chicago. In the spring of 2007, he assembled a band and started recording songs in his co-producer's basement studio.

The result of that work was his first full-length CD in 2009 titled, "Letters From Broken Street." One of the album's tracks, the self-penned "The Show Goes On," reached #9 on the fearlessradio.com weekly listener-supported countdown in the spring of 2010. Another original song from the album, "Beautiful Again," also made an impression, reaching #19 on the same countdown. Since his debut, the Dennis Fuentes Band has released several singles and EPs, which are available on streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora.

In 2018, Dennis took time to pursue work as an actor.  After being cast as an extra in a couple of independent films that year, he landed his first speaking roles in 2019. He played a real estate agent in the indie short, "Home," and an elementary school principal in the award-winning indie short, "Ducks." Since then, he has acted in over 30 projects, including several indie and student short films, a feature film, several TV and online commercials, three music videos, and a pilot episode for a sketch comedy show.

Today, Dennis Fuentes continues his creative journey in both music and film. In 2024, The Dennis Fuentes Band released new music, including the single "Middle of Nowhere," a cover of a song by the Regina, Saskatchewan-based roots-rock band The Waltons. They also released the three-song EP, "Hard Lesson - EP," both of which are available on streaming services. Additionally, Dennis is featured in several upcoming short films directed by emerging filmmakers from the Chicagoland area, scheduled for release later this year.

Looking ahead, the Dennis Fuentes Band plans to release more new music in 2025, while Dennis continues to pursue other acting opportunities.

Director Statement

Hello. My name is Dennis Fuentes. I am a singer-songwriter-actor from Oak Park, IL. But from September 2019 to October 2020, I was a proud and happy Oregonian!

After 27 years of living in the Midwest, I moved to Oregon (to the Portland area) with the intent of making it my forever home. However, my tenure in the state was short-lived due to the COVID-19 pandemic (that’s a long story for another time!). Despite the short stay, my time here left a deep impression on my heart and imagination. So much so that after returning to the Chicagoland area and reuniting with my band to record new music, I felt inspired to finally pursue a long-held dream and create my first-ever music video. This led me to return “home” to Oregon to shoot it.

The song "Middle of Nowhere" was released to streaming platforms in the summer of 2024. The song is set in the desert, and while recording it, vivid memories of my adventures in Central Oregon filled my mind. I recalled exploring Crater Lake National Park on my birthday, listening to the distant howls of coyotes at night from my campground near Smith Rock State Park, and hiking the trails along the Deschutes River. So, in June 2024, I returned “home” to Oregon and collaborated with Shields Films of Portland to shoot and co-produce the video. When you watch it, you’re witnessing not just a performance, but the genuine, pure joy of making my first film and the feeling of coming "home" once again.

I hope you enjoy my song and my first foray into being a filmmaker.
