Director Biography - Michael LASSERRE

M. LASSERRE is born in Nice in the early 80s and has shown a passion for all forms of arts since his very early years.

A child of the era of the Internet and the new technologies, he has explored ways of integrating digital technologies through arts since his teens. During that period, he has produced various paintings and works of art using the symbolic representation and graphic strength of the binary. His early abstract work also includes computer and pictorial elements; at that period, he grew fond of auteur and experimental cinema.

It was during that period that he took on Lucy(-x) as his artist name.

In the mid-2000s, he met F. Sanchez. Both embarked on a journey of producing video clips and experimental videos.

In parallel he joined a music band as V.J. and clipper and began to exhibit his pictorial and audio-visual work on the Côte d’Azur scene.

At the end of 2010, he worked with Florent Mattei on the short movie “Impact” as editor, chief camera operator and sound designer. The film has been awarded with Best experimental film at the international festival “Un Festival C’est Trop Court”.

From 2011, he divided his time between New-York and the Côte d’Azur and for a couple of years he worked on the development of a new exhibition based on his experience in N.Y.C.
During that American period, he made his first 53-min movie “R-eves”, for which he held the positions of director, cameraman and editor. He also created the score of the movie which was presented at the “Experimental Movie Festival” in Sydney.

Between 2010 and 2022, he created experimental short movies which have been selected and screened at various international festivals and exhibition venues.

He continues to work as a V.J. for different groups and got programmed at the “OVNI festival” taking place at the Center for Contemporary Cultures (Le 109) in Nice.

At the same time, he’s working as a Creative Producer and Chief Editor at the International Athletics Federation, directing for the Federation, amongst other works, two movies which were screened at the “San Sebastian International Sports Film Festival”.

He won a first prize at Sportel in 2020.

For the last 6 years he has been writing, producing, directing and editing his first feature movie “Memory of Water”.

Director Statement

“Memory of Water” has been conceived with the aim of making a self-financed feature movie. Its roots are deep in experimental art (the director’s favourite form of art) and meant to be ecologically responsible. Making the most of their micro-budget, the team decided to explore and exploit the almost infinite choices of landscapes offered by the Côte d’Azur and its back country.

Conceived from the outset as a work of transmedia art, the photographs featured in the movie were imagined and produced by the author and subsequently photographed with the collaboration of the lead actor. The collection of photos which are featured in the movie will be exhibited in a similar form once the movie will be released.

For the music and the sound-design, the director used his stage name Lucy-x and called upon his friend Pagan-Alter for the experimental and noise-based side of his work. Lastly, to represent the Nice music scene, he opted to use the band BLC MIRROR CLB’s songs.
