Oliver is a filmmaker at his core. His work seeks to discover humor and beauty by exploring the strange and grotesque. His preoccupation with the macabre can be seen most prominently in his short films CONNECTIVE TISSUE (which premiered at LA Shorts International Short Film Festival 2020), and MIDLAND (premiered at Clermont Ferrand ISFF 2016). Oliver is currently developing the features SUCH STRANGE CREATURES (a noir-ish love letter to the underbelly of Hollywood in the late 90s) and KILLING IT! (a TikTok slasher). His passion for film grew out of a childhood raised on movie sets (since birth, literally), and after graduating high school he went straight into production, honing his craft and understanding of what it actually takes to bring a script from page to screen. He’s worked in many capacities including director’s assistant, special effects makeup, casting assistant, grip, editor and production designer - just to name a few. He volunteered for the American Cinematheque and was on the restoration team that retrofitted the Egyptian Theater to screen nitrate film. A passionate storyteller, consummate set technician and devout cinephile, his life is dedicated to the art of filmmaking.
MEMORY BOX is an exploration of the people, possessions and memories we accumulate throughout our lives and how they shape us. It’s the story of two siblings who dig through a lifetime’s worth of family memories only to come face to face with the true memento that bonds them – blood. As they go deeper and deeper into the “memory box” both objects and thoughts become more obscure and distant, until they confront something that is altogether unknown. Behind a locked door lies their hidden brother - also the memories they wish not to remember. Our objective when shooting this was to present everything as true to life as possible. We aimed to create a sense of naturalism; from the sister’s relationship, to the interior of the storage container, to the way it was photographed. The hope being that this verisimilitude would establish a reality within the film. So when they discover their horrifying brother, the audience won’t question his authenticity. But instead, question the why, how and what the fuck of it all. We all keep memories locked deep within the recesses of our minds. Some so painful, we choose never to unlock them. While others act as a great source of nostalgic reprieve from the banality of the everyday. This film seeks to show how we must confront our dark difficult history in order to grow and move towards a brighter future. Within this film is something we can all lend a moment of self-reflection to.
